About Edexcel GCSE English Literature Hobson's Choice

Harold Brighouse's Hobson's Choice is one of the post-1914 plays for Edexcel GCSE English Literature Paper 1, Section B. You answer one of two essay questions from memory: each opens with a short quotation, but there is no extract. First performed in 1915 but set in Salford in 1880, the comedy follows Maggie Hobson, the shrewd eldest daughter of bullying, hard-drinking bootmaker Henry Hobson. She chooses the shy, talented bootmaker Willie Mossop as her husband, sets up a rival business and transforms both Willie and her family. Marks reward a well-supported response (AO1), context about women's roles and class (AO3) and accurate writing (AO4).

Key themes, characters and context

  • Maggie Hobson Aged thirty and dismissed by her father as past marrying, she is practical, determined and business-minded. She proposes to Willie and runs their shop.
  • Henry Horatio Hobson A pompous, controlling father who refuses to pay his daughters' settlements. His drinking leads to his fall into the cellar of Beenstock's warehouse.
  • Willie Mossop Begins timid and uneducated but grows in confidence under Maggie's guidance. By the end he dictates terms to Hobson.
  • Alice and Vicky Maggie's younger, more conventional sisters. Maggie helps secure their marriages through her clever handling of Hobson's lawsuit.
  • Gender and power Maggie overturns the expected roles of father and daughter, husband and wife, though she lets Willie take the public lead.
  • Context Set before women had the vote, the play was staged during the suffrage era. It reflects Lancashire trade and middle-class respectability.

Common mistakes in Hobson's Choice

  • Writing as if the play were set in 1915; it is set in 1880 but written later.
  • Seeing Maggie as simply bossy; she is also caring and clever, and shapes Willie's success.
  • Forgetting it is a comedy for the stage. Show you understand how situations and characters are meant to amuse an audience.
  • Treating Willie as unchanging; his transformation is central.
  • Treating context as an afterthought. AO3 is worth half the content marks, so link Victorian ideas about daughters, marriage and trade to Maggie, Hobson and Willie.
