What you need to know
- Research methods All methods from earlier topics: experiments, observations, questionnaires, interviews, correlations, case studies, meta-analysis, plus planning studies, ethics, sampling, reliability and validity.
- Data analysis Descriptive statistics, levels of measurement, significance levels and critical values, Type I and Type II errors, and the Mann-Whitney U, Wilcoxon signed-ranks, Spearman's rho and chi-squared tests. Qualitative data are analysed with thematic analysis or grounded theory.
- Review of studies The classic studies from each topic, such as Sherif et al., Baddeley, Raine et al., Watson and Rayner, Rosenhan and the option topic classic study, which can be compared and evaluated.
- Issues and debates Ethics, practical issues in research design, reductionism, comparing explanations, psychology as a science, culture and gender, nature-nurture, how understanding has developed over time, psychology and social control, use of psychological knowledge in society, and socially sensitive research.
- Synoptic skills Applying debates and methods across topics, for example using Milgram for ethics, Raine et al. for reductionism and Rosenhan for social control.
Common mistakes in Topic 9: Psychological Skills
- Choosing an inferential test without justifying all three criteria: difference or relationship, design and level of data.
- Describing a debate in the abstract without using studies from across the course.
- Comparing an observed value with the critical value in the wrong direction; for Mann-Whitney U and Wilcoxon the observed value must be equal to or less than the critical value to be significant.
- Evaluating classic studies only on ethics and ignoring reliability, validity and generalisability.
- Forgetting that qualitative data need different analysis methods, such as thematic analysis.
Try three Topic 9: Psychological Skills exam-style questions
1. A researcher compares the number of words recalled by two separate groups of participants. Which inferential test should be used? Justify your answer. (3 marks)
Show the mark scheme answer
Mann-Whitney U test; because it is a test of difference; using an independent groups design, with data at least ordinal (number of words recalled can be ranked).
2. Explain what is meant by psychology as a science. (3 marks)
Show the mark scheme answer
Psychology aims to be scientific by using the hypothetico-deductive method; with objective, empirical measurement and controlled experiments; findings should be replicable and theories falsifiable, although some areas such as Freud's theory are hard to test scientifically.
3. Explain how one study from your course raises issues of social control. (4 marks)
Show the mark scheme answer
Rosenhan (1973) showed that once labelled with schizophrenia, normal behaviour was interpreted as abnormal; psychiatric diagnosis can be used to control people by detaining or medicating them; this raises concerns about power held by clinicians; and shows the importance of valid diagnosis to protect patients' rights.
