About Cambridge IGCSE English Literature Antony and Cleopatra
Antony and Cleopatra is a drama set text on Cambridge IGCSE Paper 2: Drama. Shakespeare's tragedy moves between Rome and Egypt as Mark Antony, one of the three rulers of the Roman world, is torn between his duty to Rome and his passion for Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt. Their defeat by Octavius Caesar at Actium leads to both their deaths. Cambridge offers a passage-based question on a printed scene and an essay question on the whole play. Examiners reward awareness of the play as drama, close analysis of Shakespeare's language and a sensitive personal response to its complex lovers.
Key themes, characters and context
- Rome and Egypt Rome stands for duty, discipline and politics; Egypt for pleasure, emotion and excess. Antony's 'Let Rome in Tiber melt' shows him choosing Egypt.
- Antony A great soldier whose honour is undermined by love. His botched suicide and death in Cleopatra's arms mix nobility and failure.
- Cleopatra Changeable, theatrical and powerful. Enobarbus says 'Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale / Her infinite variety'.
- Octavius Caesar Cold, calculating and successful. He contrasts with Antony and represents the rising Roman order.
- Enobarbus Antony's blunt follower and a commentator on the action. His barge speech glamorises Cleopatra; he later deserts Antony and dies of grief.
- Octavia and politics Antony's marriage to Caesar's sister is a political alliance. His return to Cleopatra breaks it and leads to war.
- Cleopatra's death She dies by the asp's bite with Charmian and Iras, turning defeat into a staged, dignified ending that denies Caesar his triumph.
Common mistakes in Antony and Cleopatra
- Writing about the play as a novel; refer to the audience, staging, entrances and the effect of dialogue.
- Seeing Cleopatra only as a manipulator; Shakespeare presents her as both theatrical and genuinely loving.
- Confusing Octavius Caesar with Julius Caesar; Octavius is Antony's rival in this play.
- Ignoring Enobarbus's role as a commentator whose views guide the audience.
- Quoting long speeches rather than selecting short, precise phrases for analysis.
